As a child I rarely saw women in film that looked like myself. The older I got, the more apparent it became that Latinas weren’t represented in film, especially those with darker skin. The stark lack of minorities in the industry truly hit me when I attended the California State Summer School of the Arts’ Animation program in 2018. In many instances I would look around the room and could not find one face like mine. Instead of feeling belittled I felt a sense of empowerment. I had gotten a glimpse of what the workforce may look like, and I grew ever more determined to create work that celebrated my identity and provided a platform for the voiceless.
I find that animation is all four of my favorite passions: writing, filmmaking, music, and art. Above medium, I still believe the story is the heart of beautiful filmmaking. I constantly pull from my struggles and identity to inform my stories. By feeling what my characters have gone through I can not only better understand them but pull more emotion from my audience.
I’m interested in many aspects of the production pipeline of animation, such as storyboarding, producing and character design. My love for writing and graphic novels have inspired me to create my own independent graphic novel series. I currently have two plots that I’ve been developing for years and hope to see them come to life soon. Not only that, but I also want to be a leader for the Latinx community and prove to young artists that we all have a unique story to tell. I believe animation exists to provoke, to communicate and most of all, to entertain. If my films can whisk the viewer away to another universe, I’d feel immense joy that I could give another an ounce of the happiness that art has provided me. I will be studying Animation and Digital Arts at the University of Southern California in the upcoming year.
